Downtown St. John's + The Ship + Wintersong = Awesome

I'm back in Fredericton after a fabulous trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. I was able to visit with lots of old friends in St. John's, some of whom I haven't seen in five years or more. How fabulous is St. John's anyway? I mean...it did rain pretty much the entire time I was there, but most Newfoundlanders seem to just take it all in stride. It was unseasonably warm, so that certainly helped keep spirits high despite the moisture. As I no longer live in Newfoundland, I stayed in a hotel downtown for the first time in many years. It gave me the opportunity to experience downtown St. John's from a whole different perspective. To be able to walk up Duckworth and back down Water Street...wandering in and out of the shops...talking to the sales people and shop owners...makes me wish I had done that much more often while I lived there. That's the way the people who live and/or work downtown experience St. John's. So if you're ever there and you get a chance, go downtown for some shopping, food and entertainment. The place is absolutely incredible.

On that note, I was also able to take in a Folk Night @ The Ship Pub last Wednesday while I was there. It was one of only a couple of dance nights that take place there per year. It was pretty cool to sit back and watch folks doing all kinds of traditional dances while enjoying a couple of Coronas..nectar of the Gods. I would imagine you can't find that kind of entertainment in too many places in Canada these days. I hadn't been at The Ship in a very long time, and I wanted to check it out as I will be performing there at the end of February. Yup...it's going to be a great night, and I can't wait. Mark it in your calendars...February 24th.

As if The Ship, the shopping and the downtown food were not enough, I also took in "Wintersong" - a sold out performance of two local choirs Newman Sound and Lady Cove. Both groups are directed by Kellie Walsh who is so sweet you could eat her. Do people say that in other parts of Canada or is that just a Newfoundland thing?!! They were joined by the MUN Brass Ensemble and director Karen Bulmer, and the whole thing was just out of this world. I was a member of Lady Cove Women's Choir for a couple of years and many of my good friends and still in the choir. Needless to say there were a few teary moments. I crashed the after-party cause that's just the way I roll and stayed until the end. I don't like to leave parties early for fear that someone may say something funny, and I will have missed it.

I had spotted an Asian guy in Newman Sound during the show...well, you couldn't really miss him seeing that he was the only Asian face in the bunch...and figured he was Taiwanese. Sure enough, he was! I approached him during the party and we had a grand chat. He is from Tainan, which is not far from where I lived in Taichung. We swapped Taiwan stories for quite some time and he was impressed with my knowledge of his country...shocked that I hated the food...and somewhat surprised that I picked up only five or six words after living there for three years. Five or six words...not much to show for so much time immersed in another culture! Oh well...I did write and record a CD while I was there, so I sort of have an excuse. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Now please tell me you love me and go join me on Facebook or Twitter or MySpace...!

Fabulous Freddy Beach

We have been experiencing the most incredible fall weather here in Fredericton. I have been warned by countless local people that I should not be tricked into believing that the constant sunshine and lovely warm temperatures are the norm for this part of the world. I'm told that this has been the nicest autumn season in many, many years. Well...I'm new to these parts, so I'm just going to keep on believing that this is the way it will always be at this time of year. Who knows? I may even be correct in my thinking.

So here I am, out at my sister's place in Bear Island, which is about 45 minutes outside of Fredericton - otherwise known as Freddy Beach. It's a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, and I'm getting caught up on some work while my family enjoys "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" - a fabulous movie in case you're interested. The sun is so bright I can barely see my laptop screen, and it's been this way most days since I arrived here in August. How lucky are we?

I've been busy getting ready to start touring in January. I'll be kicking everything off in mid-January at Crumb's Cafe here in Fredericton and will end up in St. John's on February 24th for a Folk Night at The Ship Pub. There'll be lots of dates in lots of places during those two months, and I should be able to make some announcements in the very near future. I'm pretty excited about getting on the road!

In the meantime, I'm playing at The Garrison District Ale House on December 2 at The Fredericton Tweetup. A "tweet up" is a meeting of local Twitter users, and I'm really looking forward to being part of the event. Everything kicks off at 7:00 and will go until around 11:00. No admission! Come check it out. There will be lots of great prizes from the local business community. If you're on Twitter, my username is @LisaGillamMusic. If you follow me, I'll follow you right back! I now have over 500 followers, and I've made many meaningful connections. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to reach out and connect with lots of people.

Think that's it for now! Don't forget I can also be found at:

Vandals, Tweeters and Rose

Vandalism...I just don't understand. Why on Earth would someone feel the need to bust something up? Is it anger that causes a person to get physical? Boredom? I just don't know. What I do know is that the Fredericton Cenotaph was vandalized just two days before Remembrance Day. Of all things to destroy. It boggles my mind. In any case, the monument was severely damaged and people can make donations to assist with repair costs. I do hope they catch the culprits. Army service...yup...that would straighten them out.

In lighter news, I've been busy establishing a new business here in Fredericton. Lately I've been struggling to find a way to blend my two great loves...MAKING music and TEACHING music...into one fabulous activity. I think I've come up with a great solution. In January, I will launch a brand new music education program for preschoolers. I've called it the "Parents and Tots Music Education Program". I'm pretty excited about the whole thing! I've secured space in the gorgeous Charlotte Street Arts Centre, and I've begun registering families for classes that start in January. One of the things I'm the most excited about is that I'm going to write and record a short song about every child who enrolls in the program. Seriously, how much fun will that be? Check out my new site at www.parentandtotsmusic.com

And yes...I'll still be touring Atlantic Canada within the next couple of months. In fact, I just booked a date at The Ship in February. Pretty stoked about that, too! Schedule will be announced soon.

In addition to that, I've been "twittering" a.k.a. "tweeting" pretty regularly for a few weeks now and, I must say, I've met some very cool people on there. If you haven't tried it, you may want to give it a chance. If you have tried it...well, heck...look me up! I have two accounts @LisaGillamMusic and @ParentsandTots and I LOVE to hear from people...lots and lots of people! Everything you need to know in life, you can learn on Twitter....along with some things you may not WANT or NEED to know!

In other news, I have to send out a huge thanks to my niece, Rose, in Halifax. She has been officially elevated to "SUPERFAN" status...and you can never have too many superfans. If you know of a superfan that needs attention, please let me know!

Cheers,
Lisa

Halloween Question...Feedback Welcome

It's the end of October...Halloween is upon us, and I STILL do not have a costume. See, I'm a reluctant participant in Halloween activities...my heart is just not in it. Why? I have no idea...God knows I loved it as a child. That excitement of putting a costume together weeks in advance...I truly loved it. Even through university I was into it. My costumes were never elaborate, but at least I was dressed up like everyone else. But somewhere along the way I've lost my Halloween mojo. I WOULD even consider going downstairs and turning off the lights during trick-or-treating, but my friends with kids (and there are lots of them) would never let me away with it.

So...here I am...in the same pickle I get myself into every year. I want to go to all the Halloween parties. I even made plans with friends weeks ago to try and get myself in the spirit...in the game...but no, I am not ready for the party. Perhaps if I had some of Cinderella's mice to get me out of a jam...

The question is...on a scale of 1 to 10...how LAME would it be if I went to the party, but did not dress up in a costume? I really want to know.

In music news, I went to Halifax this past weekend to scope out gig venues and meet some important people. I met one fabulous musician, Paul Lamb, who was playing at The Lower Deck on Friday evening. His show was incredible, and he pointed me in the direction of a few good people and suitable establishments in the area. I had the best intentions for the remainder of the weekend, but then I got visiting with friends and family I hadn't seen in many years and that was the end of that. I saw my nieces, Grace and Rose, for the first time in six years (I've been away for a long time) and met some kids of old friends that I had either never met or had not seen since they were babies. What a great weekend!

Turns out I have some fans in Halifax. I delivered a number of impromptu performances for my new little buddies, and I'm happy to report that I was warmly received by all. Paige is definitely my number one fan, and I believe I may just have to take her on tour with me for moral support. She even knows all the words! Yup...it felt good to be around the kids.

So...it's back to Halifax I go in a few weeks. I have to do all the business that I didn't get done this time around. This, of course, is not a problem because (a) I love Halifax (b) I have lots of very cool people to visit there and (c) it's only a four-hour drive and the route is gorgeous. In the meantime, if you have any venue suggestions or people you think I should meet, please pass the names along. I just want to get out there and meet lots of new people!

I'm Back In Full Swing Now!

I can't believe it's October already, and I haven't written a blog entry since the end of August! Oh my...where do I begin?

First of all, I've spent the bulk of this time renovating my new digs in Fredericton. It's been very time consuming, but I've learned a great deal about building stuff. I (with the help of my father) built a couple of new walls and assembled and installed new kitchen cupboards. I can even plaster drywall now! Amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.

On the music front, I played the Friday night show at The Stanley Fair in September and had a great time. I even coaxed my sister on the stage to sing a couple of songs with me. Needless to say, that was a huge hit with the fabulous crowd! We hadn't sung together publically in over twenty years, so that was a very special experience for me.

Now that the renovations are nearing completion, my focus will be on setting up that fall tour I've been promising since the summer. Keep checking back for new dates which will be posted very soon.

In other news, you can now order autographed CDs right from the store. You can use most major credit cards and have a CD shipped straight to your door. How convenient is that?!

I promise to write regularly from this point forward...

I've Arrived! (In New Brunswick, that is...)

Wow...it's now August 31st, and I've reached my final destination...Fredericton, New Brunswick. This place is just gorgeous! Since I wrote the last time, I packed up a 26 foot U-Haul with a lot of help from some friends (thank you Andrew and Darren) and drove myself across Newfoundland to the west coast of the island. My folks have a summer home on Sandy Lake which is just outside the small town of Howley. We had to pack all of their things in the truck because they are moving to Fredericton as well. I stayed around there for a few days and then my father and I completed the trip to New Brunswick. We left on Thursday evening in a wind storm and crossed the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the Marine Atlantic ferry, Atlantic Vision. Oh my...that was one of the roughest ferry crossings I've ever experienced! Thank goodness we were lucky enough to have a cabin. Those cabins are really something! We managed to get some sleep and got off the boat at the terrible hour of 2:00 am. We drove straight through (we only stopped for gas and breakfast) and arrived in Freddy at around 11:00 am on Friday. The trip was quite painless. Actually, it would have been 100% painless if I hadn't had to back that GIGANTIC truck down off the top deck of the ferry...ack! I would highly recommend do-it-yourself moving at anyone.

On a music note, I had a couple of interviews with newspaper reporters while on the west coast of Newfoundland. I'll be sure to post those stories when they run. I grew up in that area in the small town of Stephenville, and it was nice to spend a day visiting with folks I hadn't seen in many years. I also took the opportunity to distribute CDs at a few west coast stores.

CDs are now available at the following stores in Newfoundland:

Partytime Sound - Stephenville
Arlim's - Stephenville

Newfoundland Emporium - Corner Brook
Island Treasures - Corner Brook
Newfoundland Shoppe & Gallery - Corner Brook

Fred's Records - St. John's
O'Brien's Music - St. John's

It will take a couple of weeks for me to get settled here in New Brunswick, but I should be posting some Atlantic Canada performance dates really soon. Check back for photos from my Canadian CD release in St. John's. I should be posting those within a day or two.

That's it for now!
Lisa

Oh yes...one more thing...many millions of thanks to my buddy Lori and her family for putting me up and putting up with me for the three weeks I was in St. John's! I am so grateful.

Canadian Release Party...Most Excellent!

As I have been living out of a suitcase for about three weeks now, I've been having some trouble keeping up with my blog entries.

My CD release party at The Republic on Tuesday was absolutely FABULOUS! Even though the weather was terrible (very cold and very wet), we managed to pack the place which was wonderful. The boys in the band were just about flawless which allowed me to "do my thing" in comfort and relaxation. Many thanks to all the old and new friends who came out to share the evening with me. It was a special night for sure.

Special thanks go to my buddy Lori who helped me set up and sold CDs for me, Freda (Ontario) and Leah (Saskatchewan) who drove all the way here just for the party and my best childhood friend, Jamie, who flew in on Tuesday and left again on Wednesday. You all certainly helped make the night extra special.

I'm hoping to have some pictures from the event posted within the next few days. In the meantime, check out the newspaper article that ran in The Telegram on the day of the show. It's posted in the news feed on the home page.

Party Preparations and Other Stuff

I had my first rehearsal with the guys who will be playing with me at the CD release next week. The boys are simply amazing...monsters, in fact! I had already been quite excited for the party, but now I'm completely stoked. With musicians like that, it will certainly be a good show.

I'm told my posters will be ready at some point today, so I'm set to plaster downtown St. John's with reminders about my show. Bridget, a friend of mine from Taiwan has agreed to meet me down there tomorrow evening and we're going to staple and tape with reckless abandon. I will soon be on a telephone or shop window near you. Bridget is from Newfoundland, but we met for the first time when we were working at the same school overseas. Now we're both in Newfoudland at the same time. It's a small, small world we live in.

In other news...I'm not sure if I mentioned it already...but two friends of mine are driving down from Ontario for my party. I met and worked with Freda and Leah in Bangkok, Thailand. They've decided to do a tour of Atlantic Canada (God's country) and are making Newfoundland their last stop. They will only be here for that one day, but I'm happy to have them for any amount of time!

That's it for now. I'm doing a second round of packing here in Newfoundland for my final move to New Brunswick. That's "final" for now anyway. I may never truly stop moving from place to place!

Home Sweet Home

I've been home in Newfoundland for a few days now, and I have to admit that I'm struggling to adjust to the time change and the temperature. At least I'm down to only one jacket from the three I needed when I arrived on Monday! Don't get me wrong...the average daytime temperature in Newfoundland is in the 20's these days...it just FEELS so much colder than it did in Taiwan.

Having said all that, I'm so happy to be back in Canada even though the crisp, clean air has been a shock to my pollution-poisoned lungs. I've been coughing non-stop since I arrived! The wide open spaces and cool ocean breezes have been a welcome change to the hot concrete jungle I've called home for so long. Simple things like reading product labels and driving a car have been a particularly special treat. Yup...life sure is good here!

On the music front, I've been busy getting ready for my Canadian album release party on August 18th. Things are shaping up quite nicely, and I'm getting pretty excited about the event. Don't forget to tell all your friends about it. It's at at The Republic on Duckworth Street. Music starts at 7:30 PM...it's a FREE show...doesn't get much better than that!

Farewell Taiwan - Hello Canada!

A lot has happened since my last blog entry. The past week has been a whirlwind of farewell parties and packing. I left Taiwan at midnight on August 2nd and arrived in Canada at 8:00 pm on the same day. How's that for a time warp? I am now in the Vancouver airport enjoying the free wireless service on my way home to Newfoundland via Montreal. I just enjoyed my first medium-double-double in more than two years, and now I'm all settled in to do some online updating. For the benefit of you non-Canadians...a medium-double-double is a medium coffee with two cream and two sugars from Tim Horton's - our famous Canadian coffee shop chain. In celebration of my return to Canada, I went all crazy and had real sugar instead of sweetener like I would normally choose. Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind...

My third and final farewell was particularly gut-wrenching for me. It was at P.J.'s Cafe on Soho Street in Taichung and featured many of the musicians I've come to know and love during my time in Taiwan. I was fine until the first group started to play, but then the reality of the goodbyes at the end of the night started to set in. I was an emotional wreck for a short time. For about an hour or so, it even appeared as though I may not be able to perform at my own farewell show. Luckily, I pulled it together and enjoyed playing a set for all my fabulous friends who were there to share my last evening with me. I'm glad I didn't go with my original instinct and make a run for it. Bolting from your own farewell party may not be such good form!

Anyway...all the farewell celebrations were wonderful and greatly appreciated. I felt very loved during my last days in Taiwan, and for that, I will be forever grateful. I will always cherish the friendships I developed during my time overseas, and I will continue to hope that I will run into those people again in the future. And if I don't...I will always have some fantastic memories to carry with me.

All the best to you all...

Love,
Lisa

Spontaneous Jam Session @ FuBar

I had a great afternoon down at FuBar here in Taichung. I say "down at" FuBar because the pub is in the courtyard of my very own apartment building. It's been quite convenient from a performance persepective with regards to the ease of lugging gear back and forth. Needless to say it's been convenient from a party perspective as well!

FuBar plans to have live music every Saturday afternoon followed by an open mic session. My buddy Rob was the first of many featured performers for this weekly event. He delivered a fabulous performance that was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who was in attendance. Another musician friend of ours showed up just as Rob was finishing up and suggested that we keep the music going. A person need never ask me twice, so I went right upstairs and got my guitar. We played solo and in various combinations for an additional hour or so. It was awesome...one of those days when the atmosphere is just right and you could keep playing for hours!

Packing for Home, Downloads and a FREE show!

My time in Taiwan is getting REALLY short now! Less than two weeks and I will be back home in my beloved Newfoundland for a few weeks. It's amazing how much I have left to do before I leave on August 2nd. It will be nothing short of a miracle if I get out of here with everything I need!

My album is now available for download from the store here at LisaGillam.com. This download is in MP3 format and includes all album artwork. If you are an audiophile, you may want to check out my store at Bandcamp.com. Bandcamp is a very cool service that offers the album in a variety of formats. Check it out!

Of course, you may listen to the entire album as often as you like using the "pop-up" audio player on my home page. Just click "pop-up" to let it sit outside your browser while you go about your day!

Don't forget my big album release party at The Republic in St. John's on Tuesday, August 18th. It's a FREE show, so tell all your friends about it!

The Weepies

I've been living in Asia for four of the past five years. The summer months can be difficult for people living in expat communities because that's when we experience a rather large turnover of people. The school year ends and that is that...people come and people go.

One of the greatest things about living overseas is that you get to meet countless beautiful people from all over the world. As many people come here alone, friends often begin to feel like family in a short period of time. I have developed many strong friendships in my four years away from home, and I am so grateful for every one of those relationships.

The goodbyes, however, can be excrutiating. Over and over again, we have to say goodbye to people we've come to know and love, realizing that we just may never see them again. It is an odd feeling...one I would likely have never gotten used to had I decided to remain overseas.

In any case, another one of my friends left Taiwan today. About a month ago, he asked me to learn a song by "The Weepies" and sing it for him. Having been away for so long, I had never heard of the group. I promised I would but then life took over, I got busy and forgot about his request until just last weekend. Realizing that I had only one chance left, I vowed to learn the song just for him. I sang it for him last night at a local Open Mic Night, and I'm so glad I did!

The song is called "Somebody Loved" and it is just gorgeous. You can hear it on their official MySpace Page. I'm so thankful that my friend made the suggestion...I will forever be a fan of The Weepies. If you like folk music, chances are you'll love this group. Check them out at their home page - The Weepies.

Until next time...

It's been another busy week here in Taiwan. I'm getting ready to leave the country in just a few short weeks, and I've spent a lot of time packing and shipping boxes and selling the items I can't take with me. It's amazing how much stuff a person can collect in two years! It's been difficult to determine what to take and what to leave behind...it all seems important to me.

But all the craziness hasn't kept me from establishing new artist profiles on some fabulous web sites. I now have an artist profile on iLike.com, and it has been integrated with my Facebook musician profile. You can access both services and sign up to be a fan from either page. The best news is that you can get a free mp3 of "Take It Slow" at iLike.com. Go get it today!

In other news, I attended a great party last night at 89K in Taichung, Taiwan. It was the album release and farewell party for The Rising Hedons - one of my favourite bands here in Taiwan. The show was just fabulous and the guys gave an excellent performance, as usual. Check them out!

Don't forget to tell your friends about this site and the free mp3 at iLike.com.

Another New Song - Hard Times

I've added a new song today, as promised! I wrote "Hard Times" last October during Thanksgiving weekend. That's the Canadian Thanksgiving for those of you that may be confused by the month! My co-workers went on a weekend trip to a beach town on the southern tip of Taiwan called Kenting. I stayed home to spend some time alone and write something new for my album. Considering it was Thanksgiving, I wanted to write a story about average people who, for one reason or another, have found themselves in a position of hardship and need.

I ended up with three different characters with very similar story lines. They could be your next door neighbours, your distant (or not-so-distant) relatives or the kid in the next desk at school. They have simply experienced some sort of misfortune and now find themselves in a position of having to do anything that is necessary in order to survive. Unfortunately, the stories are very sad and all too common.

I've added the lyrics to the songs page...just click on the title to read along while you listen. If you like what you hear, please send the link to other people who may enjoy the song.

Thanks!

Thanks for the Support!

I've been pretty busy for the past few days looking for new places to post my music on the internet. It is truly amazing how many sites and services are available to independent musicians these days. Getting established on even a few is certainly a full-time job.

I now have 272 fans on my Facebook musician page - Lisa Gillam Music. As a result of all that wonderful support, for which I am extremely grateful, I've been climbing up the charts pretty rapidly on ReverbNation.com. I am now listed as #3 on the chart for all musicians in New Brunswick, Canada - the place I will call home in just a few short weeks. I am also listed as #69 of all the folk musicians in Canada that are using that service. Please keep telling your friends about me and my music! One of the best things you can do for an independent musician is to help spread the word.

In other news, we've tried a new look on my home page. All feedback about your experience at LisaGillam.com is greatly appreciated. You can contact us at management@lisagillam.com.

Drop back tomorrow for another new song!

1989

I've added another new song today. "1989" is a true story about my second year of university in St. John's, Newfoundland. I'm sure anyone who attended MUN in the late 80's or early 90's can relate to some of the things I've written about in this song. I know my friends and I lived quite comfortably on Kraft Dinner and those awful wine coolers. It's a wonder we're still alive. And what about the Breezeway Bar? It's a wonder we ever got to class!

I'd like to dedicate this song to my two roommates from that year, Lori and Judy. We've remained the best of friends to this very day. True friends are for life.

Don't forget that you can find the lyrics on the Songs page.

Hi Folks!

It's a hot, sunny Sunday here in Taiwan...and I do mean HOT! It's calling for 35 degrees Celsius every day this week, and that doesn't even factor in the high level of humidity. It is now the time of year when it is more comfortable for me to stay inside during daylight hours, and enjoy all my outdoor activities after dark.

With that in mind, there was no better day to get my new Facebook and ReverbNation profiles up and running properly. You can find my new Facebook musician page by searching for "Lisa Gillam Music" and my ReverbNation address is www.ReverbNation.com/LisaGillam. When you sign up as a fan using these services, I am able to reach potential new fans through your extended networks. I am so grateful for your continued support...thank you!

Don't forget to come out and celebrate Canada Day at FuBar in Taichung, Taiwan on July 1st. There will be lots of fabulous musicians on hand to help us celebrate our national day. And you don't even have to be Canadian to enjoy the show!
